Hair Loss and Hair Breakage
Is It Hair Loss?
Every day, women and men alike lose up to 100 hairs. You may find hair in the shower, on your brush, or on your pillow. You shouldn’t worry too much, at this as this is normal and expected from everyone. This is all part of the natural growth cycle of hair. If you should start to shed substantially more hair, that could be an indicator of a more significant problem.
When you lose hair from the root, you experience hair loss. Hair loss is roughly 70% hereditary and 30% chemical. You may not be able to prevent it from happening but you can certainly take steps to keep your hair as healthy as possible.
Hair breakage is due more to a lack of proper hair care. That can include over-processing, neglect, application of hair products, and tension on hair (from things such as weaves, braids, etc.) Curly hair is especially prone to breakage due to its texture and being more likely to tangle and snag.
How To Tell The Difference
If you look at the hair on your brush, if the root still has attached the white bulb that clients mistakenly take for dandruff or product buildup, you are losing your hair. If the end of your hair is frayed or looks chewed, then it is most likely breakage.
This is a situation that can be fixed:
There are ways to decrease both hair loss and hair breakage. You need to be diligent when detangling. Be extra careful, use a wide-tooth comb and take extra care to condition your hair strands.
Getting your hair regularly trimmed is important to reduce hair breakage.
What you eat is important. Water, a healthy diet, biotin supplements and a weekly deep conditioning treatments will help maintain your hair health.
Never bleach your hair. For all of you blonds out there, bleaching your hair is a big issue. You not only increase the chance of breakage, but you are using extremely toxic chemicals on your roots which can lead to hair loss and other health problems.
If you notice your hair is thinning, you should consult a doctor or hair loss specialist. There are several hair loss solutions out there and the sooner you get help, the better.
